Anti social behaviour will not be tolerated
Click here to download the latest newsletter from the Safer Neighbourhood Team. Here is an important exert:

Police have seen a 22 per cent fall in criminal damage offences and a 22 per cent reduction fall in all crime between January and April 2008 compared with the same period last year, thanks to a dispersal order. Dispersal orders were introduced in the Woodthorpe, Richmond Park, Handsworth and Intake areas at the beginning of the year.

Police have powers to take action against people acting or likely to act in an antisocial manner by directing them out of the area. Young people under the age of 16 who are found in these areas between 9pm and 6am without a responsible adult may be taken home or to another place of safety. The reduction can be attributed to a number of factors including the police, local community forums and Sheffield City Council working together on a number of crime reduction initiatives such as diversionary activities for youngsters.

Mr Maurice Littlewood, the chair of the Handsworth Community Forum, has told local police officers that the dispersal orders have had a noticeable effect in the Handsworth area. He said: Before this deterrent was imposed in this area, groups of youths were perceived as intimidating by many members of our community. The current feeling in the community is that something positive has been done and I believe that dispersal orders, backed by a very pro-active police force, have been a success.
